A Guide to Local, Picturesque Views

Early spring beauty peeks through the winter foliage at local, scenic spots.

This week, Patch took a look at the beautiful, picturesque spots in the neighborhood. We discovered some great settings for picnics, outdoor weddings, walks and photo ops. Grab your camera and submit some of your favorite local scenes to Patch.

Bee Tree Park, 2701 Finestown Road
Beautiful scenery abounds in this St. Louis County Park's hidden jewel. Bee Tree Park offers opportunities for walking, fishing, picnics, weddings and a playground for the kids. Best of all, it is home to the historic Nim mansion, once the weekend home and gardens of Eugene Nim, founder of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

It is interesting to note that the Frisbee Shelter at the park has nothing to do with the popular, plastic discs. Rather, it is named for Emmett Lyle Frisbee, former park worker. Additionally, the Lower Shelter is so-called not for its elevation, but for Jack Lower, another former park employee.

The Entrance to the Notre Dame Motherhouse Grounds, 320 East Ripa
This tree-lined drive is the view to the entrance of the Notre Dame campus. It leads to the high school, motherhouse, preschool and Maria Center. This drive is a beautiful alternative to access the grounds.

Veterans Administration Medical Center, 1 Jefferson Barracks Drive
High on the bluffs of the Mississippi River sits this medical facility that can boast a spectacular view of the river and of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge. The 909-foot, steel arch bridge carries the traffic of Interstate 255 over the mighty river.

Cliff Cave Park, 806 Cliff Cave Road
This 222-acre St. Louis County Park offers three separate trail loops for walking and biking (Spring Valley, River Bluff and Riverside), a river-view picnic area and beautiful rock bluffs and caves tunnel the limestone-rich terrain. The winding drive down to the Mississippi River is a thick, wooded area that is home to plenty of local wildlife.

Jefferson Barracks County Park, 345 North Road
A challenging 3-mile walking trail loop, plenty of picnic space, an amphitheater for summer concerts, historic buildings, monuments and museums are included in the 426-acre park. The river bluff setting offers a panoramic view of the Mississippi River and several sites for park weddings can be reserved up to a year in advance.
