Driver to Police: 'I’ve Been Drinking Since 9 a.m.'

The Lemay man, who had crashed into a telephone pole, had four previous alcohol-related driving convictions.

A man who crashed into a telephone pole in the Lemay area admitted to St. Louis County police officers that he’d been drinking.

“(Expletive), I’ve been drinking since 9 a.m.,” the man told officers, according to a police report.

Joel Perrin, 44, of the 9900 block of Brook Avenue in Lemay, was charged Tuesday with driving while intoxicated as a chronic offender, a class B felony.

St. Louis County Police responded to an accident in which Perrin hit a telephone in the 300 block of Arlee Avenue West at 1:29 a.m. April 25. Officers said they noticed a strong odor of alcohol and said Perrin had bloodshot, watery eyes.

A blood sample showed Perrin’s blood-alcohol content was at 0.282 percent, police said. Perrin was taken to the hospital as a result of the crash.

Perrin has four prior alcohol-related driving convictions:

  • Found guilty on Feb. 9, 2001 of DWI for incident on Sept. 21, 2000
  • Found guilty on Aug. 10, 1995 of DWI on Sept. 25, 1993
  • Found guilty on Aug. 10, 1995 of DWI on Jan. 7, 1993
  • Found guilty on Aug. 18, 1993 of driving with excessive blood-alcohol content on Aug. 17, 1992 in Clayton.
