First Week of School Successful Because of Teachers and Superintendent, One Teacher Said
Trautwein Elementary School music teacher Laurie Brickey told school board members what made the first week of school a success.
Mehlville students went back to school Aug. 16 and completed their first week on Thursday, the same night the school board met in the administration building.
Trautwein Elementary School music teacher Laurie Brickey updated the board with how the first week went, including some people who made it successful.
Brickey is also the president of the Mehlville National Education Association. Here's a transcript she shared with Patch about the first week of school:
"One week ago today, Mehlville teachers and staff were able to greet the students that they had missed over the summer. They truly are the reason we do what we do. In addition to classroom teaching, we are busily presenting curriculum to parents, attending meetings before and after school for IEPs (Individual Education Plans) and 504 plans, easing concerns for new parents, representing the district on Saturday morning television, getting students safely on buses in the morning and at the end of the day, and developing character education activities.
New teachers to our district were able to hit the ground running thanks to the planning and coordination efforts of Sarah Torretta, Jessica Woulfe and Tammy Popp. These educators met with Dr. Plummer during the summer and planned a very successful NTO (New Teacher Orientation). Sarah, Jessica and Tammy utilized the Kagan strategies that they had acquired through professional development provided by the district, and passed these strategies on to our new teachers.
Thank you to the board members who were able to attend the first day of NTO and also to those who came to some of the schools the first day. Your presence is welcome and appreciated.
I would like to personally thank Dr. Knost for speaking to the teachers at Trautwein on our second day back. Your vision for the district is both exciting and inspirational.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for your volunteer service on the school board, and your commitment to the education of all students in the Mehlville District."
