Food Fight: Where Is the Best South County Fish Fry?

With Lent underway and one Friday behind us, where would you tell your friends to visit for fried cod this season?

Fried fish, cole slaw and hush puppies, anyone? It's the season of the fish fry, and we're asking Patch readers: Where's your favorite fish fry in South County or Arnold?

Every week on the South County Food Fight, we're looking the best places to dine and drink. This week, we're focusing on fish frys and you can find a map of them in the area on Patch.

Here's how the Food Fight works:

  • Each week, we'll ask a question about your favorites.
  • We invite you to post your nominations in the comments below.
  • We hope you'll also spread the word about this every week to your friends on Facebook or Twitter and get them involved.
  • Submit comments until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Then:

  • We'll take the top nominees and post an article first thing Thursday morning.
  • That article will include a poll highlighting the top nominees.
  • You vote till Friday at 5 p.m.
  • On Saturday, we announce the winner.

So where's your favorite fish fry in South County or Arnold?

So show your hometown pride and pick a place near you. Boast about that small family restaurant or other great eatery in your neighborhood.

And, if you are pulling for a certain place, share this column on your personal Facebook page and Twitter feed and ask your followers to vote.

This column is all about you—your ideas, your feedback and your voice—so we hope you will chime in and check back.

St. Justin Martyr has the best baked fish in town-I've been trying to snag the recipe for years. The fried fish is also outstanding they prepare the batter and dip it fresh on the day of the fish fry! Dot's cole slaw is homemade- the recipe contains almonds and ramen noodles. There's also cheese pizza and mac and cheese for the kiddos! Only two more left... March 2nd and March 23rd!

Saint George Catholic Church!!! They offer shrimp, cod, catfish, whitefish, and now baked Tilapia and grilled cheese sandwiches. You can buy soda or have free tea or water. The hall is clean and the Scouts are always there to help out and clean up. It happens every Friday in Lent so get over there next Friday!!! See you there

St. Matthias on Buckley Road. No square fish patties there. Their cod is fresh cut, battered and fried. The portions are generous. There are enough choices on the sides to suit any taste. Friendly workers and a dinner priced at less than $8.00.

Well it's not South County, but definitely worth the trip. Most Sacred Heart in Eureka, right at 109 & Hwy 44. I've NEVER tasted better

St. Matthias the Apostle on Buckley Road hosts the best fish fry. Best bang for your buck. Senior citizen discount. Mac and cheese is a crowd pleaser for young and old. Hand sliced cod melts in your mouth and the fried shrimp is amazing. Can't decide cod or shrimp? get combo plate for same price. Plenty of parking and seating, no steps, and carryouts are available . See you March 9th from 4-7pm.
