Get Out: Playgrounds, Cans and Beads

From playground building to canned food sculptures, take your pick of fun events in the area this weekend.

Support the Oakville baseball and softball programs or help Beasley build a playground. Chow down on fried fish, or go to St. Louis Science Center to see structures made of canned food. How are you planning on spending this weekend?

  • Oakville High Baseball/Softball Trivia Night
    When/Where: 7 p.m. Friday, March 18, at Andre's Banquet Center, 4254 Telegraph Road
Why Go: Impress your friends with your knowledge of sports trivia, and at the same time help raise money for the baseball and softball programs at Oakville High School.
    Pricing: $25
  • Beasley Playground Installation
When/Where: 8 a.m. - noon Saturday, March 19, at Beasley Elementary School, 3131 Koch Road
Why Go: Help construct a playground for the kids of Beasley Elementary. Behave, and they might even let you test it out before you head home.
    Pricing: Free
  • CANstruction Competition at St. Louis Science Center
When/Where: 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 18, at St. Louis Science Center, 5050 Oakland Avenue, St. Louis
Why Go: The CANstruction competition is probably unlike any food drive you have ever experienced. Local teams of architects, engineers and students compete to build sculptures constructed entirely of canned food. Bring the whole family out to the St. Louis Science Center and see the amazing results. Bring your own canned food and vote for your favorite structure by placing your donation near it. While you're there, check out the Climate Change exhibit and the new Omnimax feature Tornado Alley (your donated can will get you $1 off the ticket price).
    Pricing: Free
  • Fish Fry at St. Luke's United Methodist Church
    When/Where: 4:30 - 7 p.m. Friday, March 18, at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 2761 Telegraph Rd
Why Go: 'Tis the season for fried fish, and if you're observing Lent you shouldn't be eating meat today anyway. Even if you're not religious, there's nothing like home-fried cod on a cool spring evening.
Pricing: $8 for a dinner, $4 for half portions, $3 for sandwiches
  • Beading Day at Michaels
    When/Where: 1 - 5 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at Michaels, 5796 S Lindbergh Blvd, Saint Louis, MO
Why Go: Stick around for four consecutive beading workshops, and you'll walk away with a pendant necklace, pearl cluster earrings, a beaded bracelet, a twist tie flower ring, and plenty of creative jewelry ideas.
    Pricing: Free
