In Memoriam: Retired Mehlville Fire Chief Bob Hupfeld
Long time firefighter, chief and volunteer will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
The Kutis Furneral Home released the following information about the death of retired Fire Chief Robert "Bob" Hupfeld:
Fri., Jan. 4, 2013. Bob went to be with the Lord.
Son of the late Myrtle and Eugene Hupfeld; surviving wife of 54 years, Patricia Williamson Hupfeld, children and spouses, Maria (Paul) Fendler Sr., Robert (Sally) Hupfeld Jr. and Eugene (Yvette) Hupfeld, grandchildren Paul Fendler Jr., Michelle Hupfeld, Amanda Harriman, Elizabeth Fendler, Ashley Hupfeld, Allison Hupfeld, David Hupfeld and 7 great-grandchildren.
Bob was a career firefighter, starting with the Mehlville Fire Protection District in 1957 when a paid department was initiated. Bob went from the back step of the pumper to Fire Chief. Early in his career he worked on establishing Fire Local #1889.
Bob was a graduate of Bishop DuBourg High School and received an Associates Degree in Fire Protection Technology from Forest Park Community College. Bob continued his education with studies in all aspects of the Fire Service and was well versed in construction, operation and repair of fire apparatus and equipment.
After retiring from MFPD, Bob started Gateway Rescue Equipment and sold, repaired and taught the use of hydraulic rescue equipment and air bags until it's sale one year ago. Bob was able to work on rescue tools 10 days in New York at 9/11.
Bob was a member of the Missouri Mules, having served all positions up to Master Mule. He was a member of the St. Louis County Fire Academy Board of Directors, member of IAFC, Backstoppers, Make-a-Wish and active with MDA.
Health issues the last 10 years prohibited him with these activities, but serving others was always in his heart. 56 years ago, he told his then fiancee that he had to take the job (with MFPD), so that if he saved one life, then his would be worthwhile. We all say "Job well done".
