Letter to the Editor: Should the Mehlville School District Change its Name?
A Mehlville resident thinks the district should include Oakville in its name.
Renaming the Mehlville School District has been brought up numerous times over the years and nothing has been done except talk about it or bring it up at school board meetings in open comments.
Why is it so hard to change the name to the Mehlville-Oakville School District? I talk to several people in the South County area and they have no idea that Oakville is part of Mehlville School District unless they have kids that go to school in the district.
I would like to see a community-wide vote by an online poll and see a percentage of changing the name to Mehlville-Oakville School District or keeping it to the current Mehlville School District.
Please vote in the poll below.
Do you have an opinion about an issue in Mehlville and Oakville? Write a letter to the editor and email it to sarah.flagg@patch.com.

Why not Mehlville North and South? why change the district name.......although we aren't the only ones in this boat look at Rockwood School District - they have Lafayette and Marquette High Schools

Mehlville-Oakville helps us identify our school district correctly to others outside the district. So many people have no idea that Oakville is associated to Mehlville. Love the idea.

I don't think it should change. Look at seckman and fox, they are in the fox school district and same thing goes with rockwood school district as well!

I agree with Paul Anderson and the North/South idea.

Yes the oakville people are tired of being forgotten about. What does it matter there is more things that need to be addressed than a fricking name people. Like if the Kirkwood School District can start FREE all day Kindergarden, and thats without raising taxes, why can't the MEHVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT without raising taxes.

I completely understand the position of those wanting to change the name of the district. However, if we only have "X" amount of time and resources to spend trying to influence positive change in the district, might I suggest that we focus on free all day Kindergarten (let us go as far as free or sliding scale Early Childhood), new school buildings, smaller class sizes, and up to date technology in all classrooms (i.e. Smart Boards and laptops).

People should educate themselves that Oakville is apart of the Mehlville School District. If the change did occur, think about what would have to change...stamps, letterhead, posters, printing, documents, signs in front of the school. It would be a mess. Keep it the same.

Ditto people should educate themselves. Lots of school districts have schools with names that do not match the district name - unique. Technically, the district could "run out" the current letterhead like they did with logo change. Honestly, we have bigger fish to fry - passing a tax levy, compensating teachers with a fair, competative salary to retain those of quality, decreasing class size, updating facilities, updating textbooks, etc. Enough political b.s. and grandstanding. Let's get it together and make this district GREAT! People should be clamoring to live within our boundaries because of it much like Lindbergh, Clayton, Ladue, Kirkwood and Webster. We are falling behind. Out of 500+ districts in the state we are one of the remaining 4 (only 4 now) hold-outs that are NOT offering tuition free full day Kindergarten. Disgraceful.
It is MUCH more fiscally responsible to catch quality control issues EARLY in production instead of as it is rolling off the assemby line and having an inferior product to market. In this case the final product is a graduate who is hopefully well prepared to enter the global workforce. Pardon the analogy. It it meant to ensure that no student "falls thru the cracks". Early investment will pay off HUGE dividends later.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again, expecting different results. Thing will remain status quo if we don't initiate CHANGE!
FLAME ON!

I used to be on the bandwagon for changing the district name, but I think the district's new branding and logo efforts will work over time. It would work faster, but the money is not there to push it along as fast as some of us would like. There is a plan for this though. Have you talked with Jack Brickey about the branding efforts and how they will help with the district identification?

What is the average age of the persons who MISidentifiy the schools within Mehlville? And have they ever patronized the schools? Chances are they don't read Patch.com either. Just saying...

We USED to have lampost (??) banners across major roads celebrating Distinction in Performance. That should have been a clue to residents that they are part of the Mehlville School District. No $ for frills like that.

Well everyone, The online poll is closed. Here is the results.
Change it to the Mehlville-Oakville School District: 23 voted (29%)
Keep it the same: 44 voted (57%)
I don't care: 10 voted (12%)
So therefore we should just leave it alone. The people of Mehlville/Oakville community has spoken. Here is a bonus for you. Let's just say if, the 10 that voted (I don't Care) either way here is the results: If 10 voted the change it would be 42% and if it stayed the same it would be 70%. Just want to say thank you for those who voted this poll.
