Overtime Goal Gives Oakville 2-1 Win Over Mehlville
The Tigers bested the Panthers at home on Saturday.
It almost goes without saying that when the Oakville and Mehlville girls soccer teams meet up at any point during the season, area soccer fans are going to see a clean, yet hard fought game between the two district rivals.
Saturday afternoon was no different as Oakville pulled out a 2-1 win at home in overtime.
“What can you say, I mean its Oakville versus Mehlville,” Oakville head coach Dave Robben said. “It was a pretty intense game.”
Mehlville (1-2, 1-1 Suburban West) took a 1-0 lead early in the first half on a goal by Kaela Luna. The goal for the senior forward was her first of the season.
“Kaela’s been struggling here at the beginning of the year,” “She’s not a little known secret for us anymore and teams have been keying on her a lot this season. Hopefully this goal will lessen a little bit of that load that she has on her shoulders.”
Oakville (4-0, 2-0 Suburban West) got the equalizer midway through the second half of play on a goal by senior forward Ashley Burton with senior midfielder Lauren Fussell recording the assist.
“We played Notre Dame last night and then 18 hours later we had to play Mehlville in what turned out to be a warm St. Louis afternoon,” Robben said. “I was really pleased with how this team responded. We had really good composure and senior leadership in this game.”
Oakville’s game winning goal came in the second overtime period as Fussell scored her first goal of the 2012 season on a corner kick with Burton grabbing the assist.
“Gabby (Korte) played the ball up to Ashley (Burton) on the wing and she took the ball deep and got the cross off with Chloe (Hutcheson) in the box too, but the ball was a little over her head,” Fussell said. “So I just run on it and hit it in.”
The Panthers are back on the pitch this Monday evening as they travel to Lindbergh for a 6 p.m. conference showdown with the Flyers. The Tigers are back in action this Tuesday as they host St. Joseph’s Academy at 6 p.m.
