Sinkhole Threat Forces Move of Lemay Community Center Site

The new community and aquatic center will be located inside Jefferson Barracks Park.

Lemay's new Community & Aquatic Center is expected to open in summer 2014, according to a news release from the St. Louis County Economic Council, but not where it was originally planned.

The new center, which received approval last April, will be located inside Jefferson Barracks Park. A site originally proposed at Broadway and Kingston was nixed "after additional geotechnical studies revealed previously unidentified sinkhole conditions underneath the proposed location of the pool," according to the release. Sinkhole conditions reportedly raised additional questions about storm water runoff, and potential conflicts with gas pipelines that run through the site.

The team considered several alternate sites, all in the Lemay community, before settling on a location on the west side of Jefferson Barracks Park near the athletic fields.

“Our focus is on getting the pool open in the summer of 2014 in a timely and cost effective manner and that was going to be nearly impossible on the original site,” St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley said in the release.

“The new Jefferson Barracks location is beautiful site and it’s shovel ready.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be planned for this spring.
