Sendak has died at age 83. Tell us your memories of reading his books—especially "Where the Wild Things Are."
My two children are well above the age when they'd sit still for their mother and father reading a book to them. It won't be that many years before they have their own children. They'll be doing the reading. And I have no doubt that Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" will be among the books they crack open and recite. On Tuesday, we learned that the author of perhaps one of the most famous children's books of all time had died at the age of 83. The New York Times' report said the author had died from complications after a recent stroke. Writers have lauded Sendak's worth, but in particular his ability to craft children's stories out of what might have been considered "untraditional" — monsters "roaring their terrible roars" and "…

The band traveled to Washington D.C. March 28 to April 1.
The Oakville High School symphonic and wind bands earned several awards along with touring Washington D.C. earlier this month. The bands played at the WorldStrides Heritage Performance Music Festival, where the wind symphony earned the highest score of any band. "I have been very impressed with the students' consistent pursuit of excellence on a daily basis," said Band Director Vance Brakefield in an email to Patch. "The performance was a culmination of hard work and attention to detail. It is always nice to be awarded accolades from other adjudicators." The winds received a gold rating in Class 3A, an Adjudicators’ Award and the Outstanding Band Group distinction. The symphonic band earned a silver rating and a second-place finish in …

Eat like a Rockefeller, or at least John Jacob Astor, one of the passengers aboard the Titanic, whose centennial will be commemorated with lavish dinners and parties on the anniversary of the ship's sinking, April 15.
Last meals are seldom celebrated, but this month the documented meals served the infamous day the Titanic sank will again be cooked and presented throughout the Patch community. Countless home “sinking parties” are being planned. Among those commemorating the event are the chefs at the Fox Theatre and Butler’s, who are authentically reproducing the last dinner and brunch served to first class passengers on April 14, 1912, the day before the Titanic sank. These two historically reproduced foodie events are the jewels of the St Louis Titanic Centennial, a three-day event that kicks off at the History Museum on Friday. Each meal features the ultimate food trends and gourmet delights of the Edwardian era. “If I knew the Titanic was going …

The new hot trend in dining has nothing to do with food.
We've all done it. Here’s my story: Last week, I was waiting for the boyfriend to arrive for our sushi date. Bored, I watched couples at the tables around me, but one in particular caught my eye. Two young women with full plates of tempura and bright pink-and-green cocktails spent their entire meal engrossed in (not each other, not their food, not their drinks, but...) their phones. I swear they hardly said a word to each other the entire 45 minutes I was waiting. (I was super early, he was a little late. Typical.) As they left and the boyfriend arrived, I filled him in on the their ghastly behavior, my voice dripping with judgment. After dinner, as we sat a bar waiting for our movie to start, I was halfway into a work email when my …

Loved to use this story in my KG classroom over the years; the children loved the idea of monsters who were manageable and fun:-) We also loved "Chicken Soup With Rice" and "Pierre." I remember I had the books AND the recordings to go with--we'd sing and sing!   more ›
