SSM St. Clare to host support group for women with heart disease

WomenHeart, the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, and the SSM Heart Institute at St. Clare Health Center are teaming up for a community support network for women living with heart disease. The group will be hosted by WomenHeart Champion Donna Ringwald at SSM St. Clare Health Center. The next meeting will be held at noon, Thursday, May 2, in the Cardiac Rehab Department, located on the Garden Level of the St. Francis Building at St. Clare Health Center, and is open to all women living with heart disease. The support group will meet the second Tuesday of every month. Be sure to bring your lunch!
“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. As a woman living with this chronic and life-threatening condition, I know firsthand the importance of support system to help live a healthier lifestyle,” said Ringwald. “Through our partnership with the SSM Heart Institute at St. Clare Health Center we look forward to offering this monthly program and to improving the lives of women living with heart disease in our community.”
Ringwald became a WomenHeart Support Network Coordinator after attending the WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic in October 2010. There, since 2002, nearly 60 women heart disease survivors gather to be trained to become volunteer community educators and support network coordinators in an effort to help women live heart-healthier lives and receive the support they need.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women and more women than men have died from heart disease every year since 1984. WomenHeart advocates for prevention, early and accurate diagnosis, and proper treatment of heart disease, and WomenHeart Champions lead the only national community-based, patient-led network of support groups for women living with heart disease.

More About SSM St. Clare Health Center
SSM St. Clare Health Center, part of the SSM Health Care group of seven hospitals, is the newest in and around St. Louis. St. Clare is a state-of-the-art hospital that sought input on its design from doctors, patients, architects and patient advocates during a four-year planning process.
SSM St. Clare Health Center is the successor to St. Joseph Hospital in Kirkwood, which closed March 30, 2009, as SSM St. Clare Health Center opened in Fenton.
St. Clare, born in 1212, formed her own community of sisters that depended on donations to survive. St. Clare, whose mission was to serve the poor, was an influential spiritual advisor to St. Francis of Assisi, popes and other church leaders.
SSM St. Clare Health Center has 154 all-private patient rooms, 30 emergency services exam rooms, 12 labor-delivery rooms and 10 OB/GYN patient rooms. All health records at the health center are electronically compiled with medical histories and test results available at the bedside.
There are 1,100 employees and 800 physicians on the health center medical staff. The 54-acre Fenton campus includes an outpatient care facility, a medical office building and an outpatient surgery center. SSM St. Clare Health Center also operates a Weight Loss Institute and a Sleep Center.
