Parents Would Rather Discuss Sex with Kids than Weight

Addressing the subject weight with children just may be the most difficult conversation to be had from a parents perspective.

Active readers with Twitter accounts stumble over various topics by the minute. Recently, this reader came across a tweet that suggested parents would rather discuss anything with kids other than issues referencing weight management, including drugs and teen sex. To say this article was personally thought-provoking would be an understatement.

Teen sex and drugs seem to be a preventative discussion in many cases. Often sex, alcohol, drugs and violence are issues that are difficult, if not impossible, to sweep under the rug for parents. 

Weight management issues are the most common of all the aforementioned topics that parents face with children.  Challenges usually arise well in advance of drug and alcohol usage. Children, especially females, feel discussions of this nature are negative attacks or if something "is wrong" with them.

These discussions can hurt children's feelings, promote negative self-esteem and inhibit further communication. However, conversations combined with action and leadership can inspire communication, healthy living, or bring underlying issues to fruition when done correctly. It is "correctly" that doctors, parents, children, speakers, authors and writers find difficult.
