In an effort to bring attention to the issue of college student suicide, Jefferson College’s Active Minds student organization, COMTREA on Campus, and the Shoeman Water Project will host a suicide prevention display on the Hillsboro campus Library patio as part of World Suicide Prevention Day on Tuesday, September 10.

The event will last throughout the morning and into the afternoon. It is open to everyone in the community. Pre-registration is not required.

There will be 1,100 shoes on display to represent the 1,100 college students that complete suicide each year. Those that attend can participate by typing a personal story regarding someone lost to suicide.

Information on suicide prevention will also be available in addition to details regarding the “Ask Listen Refer” online suicide prevention training that is now a statewide effort in Missouri. Those that attend are encouraged to complete suicide prevention training at www.asklistenrefer.org.

Attendees can also donate shoes to the Shoeman Water Project, which collects donated shoes of any kind, (new or gently used) from schools, churches, businesses and shoe drives, and exports the shoes to street vendors in places like Haiti, Kenya and South America to raise funds for clean water programs in communities around the world.
