Get Out: Charity, Chili and Comedy

From rodent races and a chili cookoff to local theatre and art, we've got plenty of fun for you to get out for this weekend.

With everything going on this weekend, there is no excuse to stay in and be bored. Raise money for a good causes with mice, trivia or chili, or get your weekly dose of culture with some Buddhist art or British comedy.


  • When/Where:
    7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at Genesis Banquet Center, 2651 Telegraph Rd.
    Why Go: Help raise money for the Mehlville Band's scholarship fund, take your shot at some prizes and get all the wine, beer and snacks you like.
    Pricing: $20 per person, $160 for a team of eight
  • Family Valentine Dance at 
    When:
     6:30 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17
    Why Go: Sure, Valentine's Day was technically on Monday, but shouldn't we celebrate love all the time? Bring the whole family out to Beasley Elementary Thursday evening to show off how much you adore one another.
    Pricing: Free
  •  at Cliff Cave Library
    When: 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17
    Why Go:
     Puppet shows are always a good time, especially when they're adapted from your kids' favorite picture books. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
    Pricing: Free
  •  at the VFW
    When/Where:
     6 - 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at VFW Post 4223, 215 Military Rd.
    Why Go: Who doesn't love watching rodents running around for a good cause? Proceeds go to some Lindbergh High grads for a service trip to Africa.
    Pricing: $20

  • When/Where:
    2 - 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20 at Occasions Banquet Hall, 9451 Gentry Ave.
    Why Go: You get to taste a variety of chili recipes from local businesses and vote on the best, while at the same time helping out tornado victims in Sunset Hills.
    Pricing: Suggested $5 donation
  • "Winter Always Turns To Spring" Art Show Opening
    When/Where:
    7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at 7611 S. Broadway, South Carondelet (just northeast of Lemay). Show runs until March 18.
    Why Go: This is a joint exhibit with art from both St. Louis and national artists, interpreting a passage from the Buddhist teachings of Lotus Sutra. Winter turning to spring is a metaphor for an afterlife. Go for the art, stay for the culture and maybe learn something along the way.
    Pricing: Free
  • Round and Round the Garden at Black Cat Theatre in Maplewood
    When: 8 p.m. Thursday - Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday
    Where: Black Cat Theatre, 2810 Sutton Blvd., Maplewood
    Why Go: If you are a fan of British humor, you will probably enjoy this sexual farce, about a librarian trying to seduce (simultaneously) his estranged wife and two sisters-in-law. For mature audiences, obviously.
    Pricing: $25 for adults; $20 for seniors and students.
