Grab & Go: Seuss, Elmo and Girl Power

From Seuss and Sesame Street to daddies and daughters, take your pick of fun family activities this week.

This weekend is packed with great things to do with the family, from honoring the birthdays of Dr. Seuss and Elmo, to teaching teens to grow into strong, independent girls. Here are our top picks.


  • When/Where:
    6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24 at Hagemann Elementary, 6401 Hagemann Rd.
    Why Go: In honor of the whimical and ever-rhyming genius of Dr. Seuss, join Hagemann Elementary in some fun Seussian stories and activities.
    Pricing: Free
  • by Mehlville Theatre Arts
    When/Where:
    7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24 through Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Performance takes place at Mehlville High School.
    Why Go: The show is as fun to watch as a Seuss book is to read, and the talented young folks of Mehlville deserve your support. A good alternative to Seuss story times or literacy night if your kids are a bit older.
    Pricing: $5 in advance, $6 at the door, $7 reserved
  • at Borders
    When/Where: 2 - 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at Borders, ‪25 South County Center Way‬, Mehlville.
    Why Go: It's his birthday, come on. Don't you think you owe it to the little guy to show up, after he slaves away year after year to entertain your little ones on Sesame Street? There will be plenty of Elmo stories, crafts and music—lots of fun for the younger crowd.

  • at South County YMCA
    When/Where:
    7 - 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at South County YMCA, 12736 Southfork Road.
    Why Go: It's the perfect opportunity to show your little munchkin what she means to you by taking her out on the town. Dinner, dancing, crafts and a souvenir to remember the occasion.
    Pricing: $22 per couple, $8 for each additional child
  • in Frontenac
    When/Where:
    10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 at Hilton St. Louis Frontenac, 1335 S. Lindbergh Blvd., Frontenac
    Why Go: This all-day event provides valuable lessons for teen/preteen girls (ages 11-18), wrapped up in fun activities. Sessions cover topics like staying safe on social networks, dating abuse, self esteem and the difference between leadership and bullying. There will also be a fashion show, science fair and marketplace, all featuring local girls.
