Sluggers Rebuild Joplin, Honored with Their Own Holiday

September 28 was "St. Louis Sluggers Appreciation Day" in Joplin, MO.

The Queen of All Saints St. Louis Sluggers Disaster Recovery Team helped build more than 12 homes during a service trip in Joplin last month.

Joplin's mayor, Melodee Colbert Kane, proclaimed Sept. 28, 2012, to be "St. Louis Sluggers Appreciation Day."

More than 20 Sluggers, all parishoners or friends of Queen of All Saints Parish, helped install bath and kitchen cabinets and worked on siding, trim, painting, clean up and construction of two decks.

The Sluggers joined several sports teams—including the Royals, the Cardinals, the Blues, the Rams and NASCAR—as part of the Governor's Challenge to sponsor 35 new homes for victims of natural disasters.

Father Brian Fallon, associate pastor of Queen of All Saints and the newest member of the team, held a daily mass for participants.

"Much work remains in Joplin," Jerry Mueller with the Sluggers said in an email to Patch. "Individuals are welcome all year long to assist Habitat and other recovery operations."

The group has made 11 trips to the Mississippi Gulf Coast rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina, and this trip volunteers marked their third to Joplin.
