Civil War Weekend: Making Knives the Old-Fashioned Way

No modern machines were used to make this old Civil War-era pocket knife.

As thousands flocked to Jefferson Barracks Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Camp Jackson Affair re-enactment, several old-time stands sprung up to teach attendees about life in the 1860s.

Ken Mikuleza of Granite City, IL, has been welding knives and other works of art for 14 years. Using no modern equipment, he made several pocket knives for the audience, explaining the process of heating and beating the metal.

Editor's Note: Thank you to Ken for letting Patch film this project. Wednesday, we will be running another multimedia project on the history of the Camp Jackson Affair.
