Missouri Civil War Museum Earns Historic Preservation Award

The Daughters of the America Revolution gave the award for the museum's outstanding preservation achievements.

The Missouri Civil War Museum (MCWM) received the Historic Preservation Award from the Olde Towne Fenton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

The MCWM project began in 2002 to convert the historic Jefferson Barracks Post Exchange Building into a museum displaying Missouri’s Civil War history.

It’s founders, Mark Trout, John Maurath and Gary Stevens, along with other staff and volunteers, have put in thousands of hours restoring and refurbishing the building.

“We very much appreciate this award,” said Mark Trout in a release. Trout is the chairman of the Missouri Civil War Museum. “We know the DAR organization is strongly committed to history and historic preservation. This is a great tribute to all of the hard work that our members have put into restoring our historic building.”

The award recognizes organizations for outstanding achievements in historical preservation.

“We are honored to present the DAR’s Historic Preservation Recognition Award to recognize the work of so many in such a very worthwhile effort for our community and our state,” said Chapter Historic Preservation Chairman Nora Zimmer.

The museum is expected to open this winter and from the St. Louis County Port Authority to create an additional Civil War Studies Center from the building next to the museum.
