Oakville Teacher: American Idol Semifinalist Is "Same Kid He Was in High School"

Our partners at FOX2 sat down with Director of Choirs Paula Martin to discuss her time teaching Curtis Finch, Jr., who made the show's top 20.

Have you been cheering on Oakville High School grad Curtis Finch, Jr. on this season of "American Idol?" The 24-year-old recently made the show's top 20.

"My family sang gospel music and so gospel music is in my blood," he said in a talking head for the reality TV singing competition. (Watch him hit an impressive high note in the video above.)

Finch told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch it's been a "blessing" to advance on the show--and win the praise of judges and former contestants.

Director of Choirs Paula Martin sat down with FOX2 to discuss her memories of Finch in the classroom. She said Finch always showed a talent for performing.

"If he just lets his heart shine through he’ll do really well," she told FOX2.
