El Maguey Makes Dining a Fiesta

Seeking south of the border flavors? Just head to South Lindbergh Boulevard and Concord Plaza Shopping Center where El Maguey provides good Mexican food, served pronto.

El Maguey Mexican Restaurant has earned a loyal following for good reason. It's been serving good food at affordable prices since it opened in Concord Plaza years ago.

Over those years, little has changed. The dining room décor still features Mexican folk art paintings that decorate the walls and colorful lacquered tabletops. The menu still offers its combination plates, the traditional favorite with cost-conscious customers.

There have been a few changes since El Maguey opened with the addition of a second dining room and an expanded menu.

Added dishes include Mexican regional plates such as Carnitas (slow cooked pork tips) and Chile Colorado (beef tips simmered with red chile sauce). Another specialty worth trying is the Chilaquiles Mexicanos, a stuffed corn tortilla with chicken and cheese that’s sauced and served with rice and guacamole salad.

Ranchero, Mexicano and Tapatio (priced at $10.25) are all steak variations, each topped with a different sauce or combination of grilled chiles and vegetables. Steak Jalisco ($11.99) is El Maguey’s version of surf and turf. This dish features a grilled rib eye with shrimp served on a bed of mushrooms onions, peppers and finished with a melted cheese topper.

Fajitas fans have eight different versions to consider. There are also several stuffing options used to create El Maguey’s Quesadillas Rellenas, Enchiladas and Burritos Especiales. Salads and soups offer an alternative for those seeking lighter fare. Appetizers include an assortment from queso dip to fajita nachos, however, the favorite before-meal starter is the complementary chips and salsa.

The best buy remains the combination plates priced from $5.25 - $7.50 for lunch and set at $8.95 for dinner. Combo plates are dished with sides of refried beans and rice and match up two to three classic Tex-Mex items like the hard shell taco, enchilada, burrito, tamale, chalupa or the chile relleno.
