Murphy's on 21: Grand Opening Saturday

A Mehlville grad opens new pub and sandwich shop in his old neighborhood.

Steve Murphy and Pat Cooke have opened Murphy's on 21 at 13226 Tesson Ferry Road--the location of a former St. Louis County Police sub-station in Cedar Plaza.

Murphy's on 21 is a pub and sandwich shop, with signature offerings like a Buffalo Chicken sandwich and Smackers, a tasty twist on wings made from balls of Italian sausage tossed in buffalo or BBQ sauce. The menu starts at just a dollar.

Murphy and his partner converted the strip mall police station during the past summer and had a soft opening this fall. They are now ready to welcome their neighbors for a pint and sandwich Saturday, January 12 from 11 a.m. to last call.

They will have raffles, food and drink specials, giveaways and more throughout the day.

The pub is family friendly during the day, and they even offer a children's menu. During the evening Murphy expects a more mature crowd. Murphy calls his place a lounge with food, rather than just a bar or a restaurant.

The pub has seven flat screens around the main lounge and one in a private party room outfitted with a couch for casual gatherings. For games days they bring out a 12 foot HD projection screen.

“I’m thrilled we were able to open in my old stomping grounds,” said Murphy.“I think we’re going to fill a need for the area to have a fun place to go when they want to stay in the neighborhood.” Murphy.

is a life-long South County resident and Mehlville Senior High graduate.

“We’re proud to be the newest hospitality destination on Tesson Ferry. I look forward to being a great neighbor to the area and making new friends for many years to come,” said Cooke.

The sandwich shop style menu, created by Chef Richard Bartoloni, offers appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches and French bread pizzas, all prepared fresh. A children’s menu is also available daily until 7pm. Food pricing ranges from $1 for the dollar roll sandwich to $7 for the handmade French bread pizza.

In a nod to days gone by when a pub was actually known as a “Public House” where business was conducted, Cooke and Murphy have both become certified Notary Publics in the state of Missouri and offer notary services to patrons at no charge. As several customers have already noticed with a grin, this service is advertised on the door right below the operating hours.
