Obama Administation Extends Enrollment Deadline for January 1 Coverage

For those who waited until the last minute to try and enroll in the Federal Health Care Marketplace the Obama administration announced today that consumers have one extra day to sign-up.  Individuals and families now have until December 24, 2013 at 11:59 pm to enroll for health insurance coverage through the Marketplace.  Still, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid encouraged those wishing to enroll to not wait until tomorrow if possible.

The administration's decision was made in response to a high level of traffic on the healthcare.gov website this morning.  In response to the high volume, the website has at times used a queuing system, or waiting room, which makes individuals wait for a certain time period before starting the application.  The extension is intended to allow all those who wish to enroll for January 1 coverage the opportunity to do so.

It is important to note that individuals can still enroll in a health insurance plan through the Marketplace after the new December 24 deadline.  However, individuals who enroll in a plan after December 24 will not be covered under the plan until February 1 at the earliest.
