Civil War Weekend: Tensions Rise at Camp Jackson Affair

Shots broke out between Union soldiers and civilians and 28 were left dead.

Thousands came to Jefferson Barracks for the re-enactment of the Camp Jackson Affair, a key turning point for Misssouri's attitude in the Civil War. 

At the affair, Union soldiers and civilians clashed in the streets of St. Louis and 28 were left dead, with another 100 injured. 

The event was organized by Freedom's Gateway, an organization dedicated to remembering the Civil War in St. Louis as part of the 150th anniversary of the war's start. The group received funds from the and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

"I can't thank them enough," said Frank Aufmuth, who headed the event. "It wouldn't be possible without them or St. Louis County Parks. I had a great committee."
