Local Projects Compete Online for $15,000

Lemay Child and Family Center and Point Elementary School have the opportunity to win funding from Monsanto.

Two local projects have a fighting chance at winning $15,000 in Monsanto’s Grow St. Louis Contest.

The company is hosting an online competition where 120 St. Louis nonprofits submitted projects in need of funding. Monsanto will award $15,000 to the project with the most votes online, giving $10,000 and $5,000 for second and third places.

Voting ends Jan. 29 and supporters can vote once per day on the Grow St. Louis website.

project is currently in fifth place. The nonprofit organization is trying to raise $600,000 for a new playground.

The project will include an infant and preschool play space, along with playground equipment, a basketball area and swing. The center also wants to construct an outdoor classroom and nature study area, a kickball field and bike path.

Not far behind, in 19th place, is , who would also use the funds for an outside project. The school would implement a cafeteria composting program and outdoor greenhouse for year-round gardening.

The also need maintenance. Each grade is responsible for a garden at the school, and lessons are incorporated into the daily aspects of caring for the space.

Grow St. Louis is in its second round of the contest with money going to Stray Rescue, Act II Community Theater, and Mascoutah Little Indians Youth Football program during the first round.
