New Jefferson Barracks Memorial Commemorates First Parachute Jump

The public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony on March 1.

The 101st anniversary of the first parachute jump from an airplane will be celebrated with the dedication of a new memorial at Jefferson Barracks Park on March 1.

Capt. Albert Berry made the first jump in 1912 in South St. Louis County, according to Missouri National Guard.

Missouri Gateway Chapter 101st Airborne, 82nd Airborne, Air National Guard, Special Forces, 173rd Airborne, 187th Airborne are working together on a memorial event to commemorate the occasion.

The ceremony will take place at noon across from the gate to the Missouri Air National Guard Field on Hancock Road, rain or shine. The glass and steel monument will be built across from the AANG parade field, where the first jump took place.
