South County Students Band Together for Gapsch Family

Oakville Middle School students will host a hat day to raise money for the family, who were the victims of a house fire last week.

Students in school districts across South County are organizing their own fundraising efforts for the Gapsch family, and have already raised more than $3,800.

Last week, 79-year-old Georgetta, 38-year-old Terry and 11-year-old Maci Gapsch died following a house fire. Georgetta's son, Mehlville Fire Protection District firefighter Mike Gapsch, was among the first responders to the scene. 13-year-old Sperreng Middle School student Mia Gapsch is the sole survivor of the fire.

Oakville Middle School students will join the growing number of Lindbergh and Seckman school district students organizing their own efforts for the family. The school will sponsor a hat day, where students pay to wear their hats inside.

An employee at the school district is a family member, according to the Lindbergh School District.

Members of the MFPD and St. Louis County Police Department are also showing their support. They'll be hosting a barbecue Friday and Saturday at Sperreng Middle School, 12111 Tesson Ferry Rd. They'll be serving up chicken, pork steak, brats, burgers and hot dogs at the event.
