Remembering to Give Thanks This Thanksgiving

Have you jumped straight from Halloween to Christmas? This is just a little blog about how I'm trying to remember to slow down and say thanks during this Thanksgiving season.

Despite the efforts of retailers and radio stations, I’m determined to celebrate Thanksgiving this year and not go straight from Halloween to Christmas. Is anyone else with me?

I went to West County Mall the other day where I was greeted by many reminders that Christmas is a mere 6-plus weeks away.  There was the photo stand all set up and ready for Santa, Hillshire Farms has returned with their seasonal sausages and treats and many stores were adorned in their Christmas finery.

However, Nordstrom, as their print ad has advertised, won’t be decking their halls until Nov 25 because they like to celebrate one holiday at a time. I definitely noticed and appreciated their efforts.

That’s not to say that I haven’t begun to think about Christmas.  I have even purchased a gift or two; however, I’m doing my very best to remember to spend this November reflecting on and expressing what I’m thankful for.

I borrowed an idea from my cousin that is forcing me to think about it daily.  Every morning, I log onto Facebook and write out something I’m thankful for.  So far it’s been pretty easy, my husband, my kids, my parents, my siblings, my best friend, etc.

I’m wondering if it’s going to become more difficult as the days go on.  I’ve already been tempted to do some posts that reflect things in a slightly sarcastic or humorous way; however, I’m trying my best to stay sincere and reflective.

As I write this, my family is dealing with a multitude of medical issues that are definitely weighing heavy on my heart.  That doesn’t negate the fact that I have blessings all around me. It’s all in how you choose to look at it.  I guess that’s been my disposition all of my life.  I trend toward the positive side.  I’m more optimistic, than pessimistic- more “glass half full” rather than “glass half empty.”  It’s just the way I try to “do” life.

So I don’t begrudge the retailers who are doing all they can to garner their share of the almighty seasonal dollar, nor do I judge those who are already almost finished with their Christmas shopping.  I just hope, that in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, that all of us take the time to say thanks.

Thanks to those who make our lives easier, thanks to those who make us feel loved, and thanks to those who make us feel needed.  I even say thanks for the challenges in my life that make me stronger, and the trials that remind me that I need my God.  I have so much in my life to be thankful for, and if you look closely enough, you’ll find that you do as well!
