Oakville and Seckman Students win 'Student of Ethics' Awards from BBB

The BBB awards three students $2,500 for college expenses based on their essays about ethical decisions they have made along with academic achievement, leadership and community service.

Everyone faces ethical dilemmas, sometimes on a daily basis. We make decisions based on our upbringing, experience and the people around us.

The Better Business Bureau encourages schools and businesses to incorporate ethical principles - and ethics education - in their curricula or training.

Every year, we invite high school juniors to submit essays explaining how they've faced decisions requiring an ethical principle as part of the annual Student of Ethics Award, a $2,500 award to defray the cost of higher education. CHARACTERPlus judges the essays and other information submitted by the students and selects three winners. Applications are generally due in early May.

This year's winners wrote resisting about peer pressure to do something they thought was wrong, resisting the temptation to cheat on assignments and saying "no" to a classmate who had obtained copies of a test before it was administered.

In each case, the students said they felt better about themselves when resisting the temptation to cheat or peer pressure to do something that the student regarded as wrong, even though the 'wrong' choice might have gotten them a better grade or made them more popular with peers.

We congratulate these young people on their ethical decisions as well as their academic achievements, and we wish them well in their future studies.

The award provides $2,500 toward college expenses and recognizes students who demonstrate high ethics through leadership, community service, personal integrity and academic achievement.

The winners are:

  • Melina Delkic, Oakville Senior High School, St. Louis County, Mo.
  • Nathaniel Robert Leingang, Columbia High School, Columbia, Ill.
  • Jacqueline Mueller, Seckman High School, Imperial, Mo.

Delkic, who speaks Spanish, German and Bosnian in addition to English, is considering several different universities, where she hopes to study international business or marketing as well as further concentration on Spanish and German.

Leingang said he plans to study engineering or sports management at a four-year university.

Mueller plans to attend Missouri University of Science and Technology, where she expects to major in biological sciences with a minor in psychology. She plans to attend medical school after completing her bachelor’s degree.

The students and winners of the BBB’s TORCH Awards will be recognized at a Nov. 2 luncheon. The TORCH Awards recognize 11 businesses and two charities who also exemplify high ethics in their treatment of customers, employees and suppliers.

The top award will go to Kevin J. Hunt, president and chief executive of Ralcorp Holdings Inc., in recognition of his company’s commitment to exceptional
ethical business practices and customer service. Last year’s top recipient, Derek Glanvill, corporate president and chief operating officer of McCarthy Building Cos., will present the award to Hunt. Jasmine Huda, KMOV news anchor, will emcee.

The Nov. 2 event is in the Khorassan Room at the Chase Park Plaza at noon. Tickets for the luncheon are available at $50 a person. Tables for 10 are available at $500. For additional information or reservations, contact the BBB at 314-645-0606 or email executive.assistant@stlouisbbb.org.
