A Political Bottom-Line: Build Your Society from the Ground Up

A thought experiment presented by Robert Frank in his new book, 'The Darwin Economy' provides an excellent background into the history and complexity of societal structure and modern governance.

I'm in the midst of a fascinating book at the moment titled, The Darwin Economy: Liberty, Competition, and Common Good by Robert Frank (no relation that I know of). In the book he predicts that, "within the next century Darwin will unseat Smith as the intellectual founder of economics."

I wish I could be around to see if that is the case, but that's not really what this post is about. In the book, he posits what I believe to be a fantastic thought experiment for the bottom line in modern-day politics. Oddly enough, it has to do with a worldwide flood and people on a boat.

He's a little more detailed, but in short:

Imagine a flooded world leaving only 1,000 people alive on a boat. Flood recedes. The world is split up into 10 relatively equal parts with 100 people each. No infrastructure of any kind (money, roads, buildings, factories, etc.) exists. Everything was destroyed in the flood. Each group is permitted to build their own society as they see fit and you can join any of the 10 groups.  

So, here is your chance.  Build your society from the ground up.  Whatchya' got?
