El Coco Loco, Excellent Mexican Fare in Hazelwood

The newest Mexican eatery to the area offers reasonably priced cuisine with an authentic taste.

Located in a strip mall on Howdershell Road across from the , El Coco Loco is an unsuspecting Mexican eatery that offers big flavors at a small price.

With menu items ranging from the simple to the extravagant, El Coco Loco prepares all of its food with finesse. The lively interior boasts plenty of seating, as well as a bar area for late night dining and drinking. The large windows allow plenty of sunlight to shine in, which provides a cheerful atmosphere.

Every meal starts with the standard chips and salsa at El Coco Loco. During my visit, chips and salsa were brought out almost immediately. The crispy, dense chips paired wonderfully with the fresh salsa.

The menu itself is expansive, with items to please every palate. Try the taquitos with guacamole, $5.99, or the Nachos Deluxe, $6.99, as an appetizer. The nachos come topped with beans, cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream. The portion size is massive and is sure to satisfy even the hungriest of appetites.

El Coco Loco's most popular draw is their expansive lunch specials menu. Lunch chimichangas, $6.49, are a popular option. These fried burritos come stuffed with your choice of shredded beef or chicken.

I tried the Huevos a la Mexicana, $5.99, also offered on the lunch specials menu. This dish was comprised of two scrambled eggs mixed with bacon and pico de gallo. Served with rice, beans and my choice of corn or flour tortillas, it was a hefty portion of food that could easily feed two.

For the lighter appetites, El Coco Loco has an A la Carte menu, where customers can choose smaller portions of their Mexican favorites. Try the Mexican Tacos, $5.25, this popular standby consists of three tacos with the choice of carne asada, chicken or pork.

Service was friendly and efficient, further adding to the welcoming atmosphere of El Coco Loco. Prices were also extremely reasonable, with most lunch items running less than $15, and many even less than that.

Next time the craving for fresh, inexpensive and flavorful Mexican food strikes, give El Coco Loco a try. Your stomach will definitely thank you.

I'm going to try it---we've been looking for a place with good Mexican food.

I went one saturday evening...hoping to get my Mexican "fix" since There isn't a El Maguey around and while i love Pueblo Nuevo...their vegetarian offerings are very limited. Other than the couple at the Bar and the workers, I was the only person in the place.....so service was excellent (although they did not have any cold Dos Equis XX,) but I was not impressed with the food. The enchilada sauce tasted a bit burnt...None of it was bad, just didn't knock my socks off. I'll give it another try, but maybe there was a reason I was the only person there at 6:00PM on a Saturday night.

I'm kind of with Rick, granted I haven't found any place in the St. Louis area that I really like. I went one Saturday afternoon and sat at the bar. There were about five of us. My food came out quick and was ok. It just didn't make me say I want to come back.

I haven't been but I'm pretty picky about my Mexican. My favorite location is in Columbia so that should tell you something. What do you guys prefer to order when you eat at a Mexican restaurant?
