Last night at Kennedy Recreation Center, the Mehlville Varsity team coached by Jim Arno needed to beat Whitfield to move on to the finals of the Founders Cup. On Thursday night Mehlville won 11 - 1 against Whitfield. So, a large crowd turned out to support the Mehlville team to see if they could do it again, and they did!
Freshman Adam Ryffel, with an assist by Luke Hemenway, started off the game with a goal, which was a nice twist on the previous game where Luke scored the first goal of the game off an assist from Adam. Nick Durham followed with a second goal, and senior Billy Borner made it three. Thus, the first period ended with Mehlville 3 and Whitfield 0.
Adam started the second period off by getting a power play goal, making it 4 - 0. Another power play goal was scored by Joey Parker bringing the total to 5 for Mehlville. Senior Billy Borner not to be outdone, scored one making it 6. Freshman Tommy Loeffelman buried one making it 7, followed by Joey again, and then senior Jake Schaefer scored and brought the total to 9. The Mehlville crowd was going crazy at Kennedy as the second period ended.
In the third period, Adam Ryffel scored again giving himself his first Varsity hat trick. Under two minutes left in the game, Joey Parker scored giving himself a hat trick too. The game ended with Mehlville scoring 11 goals on 48 shots and Whitfield 0 goals on 15 shots. Way to go for Mehlville's goalie, Nick Williamson, who got a shut out. Now on to the finals of the Founders Cup for Mehlville, where they will play Priory. The Founders Cup Final game will be held at Queeny Park at 8pm on Monday Feb. 18th. Come out to the game and support your home team. Go Panthers!
