Doubling Sales: Dealer Repossesses SUV, Sells It Twice, Police Say

The dealer, an Oakville man, didn't tell man he never applied for financing, took Explorer back without missed payments and closed up shop.

An Oakville man faces criminal charges after his dealership repossessed a Ford Explorer and then sold the car again, police said. The original buyer did not miss any payments.

Joby Aaron Schraier, 37, was charged with unlawful merchandise practice and forgery.

St. Louis County Police said Schraier told a man who bought a Ford Explorer his business, Auto Credit Mart, that he was approved for financing. However, Schraier never applied for financing, police said.

Instead, Schraier told the man to send payments to Auto Credit Mart, which was located at 9440 St. Charles Rock Road in Breckenridge Hills. The man made a $385 down payment and a $490 payment several days later.

When the man attempted to make a payment Sept. 12, 2011 he found the business was closed.

Less than one month later, his car was repossessed, and the man found he had no financing for the Explorer, police said. The business had closed and the cars were moved off the lot.

In the meantime, another man bought the Ford Explorer in November 2011 from someone who said he was with Auto Credit Mart.

A review by the Missouri Department of Revenue showed the business obtained duplicate titles and used them to repossess vehicles, police said. Police said Schraier notarized an application for a duplicate car title with a forged signature on the application.

Schraier posted 10 percent of a $10,000 bond and was released from jail July 30.
