UPDATE: Fire Destroys Home in South County

A two-alarm fire Monday destroyed a South County house that stood for more than 150 years, Assistant Chief Dan LaFata of the said. No one was injured.

The homeowner was out with her daughter at the time, LaFata said. A woman on the scene identified herself as the one of the homeowner's grandchildren but declined to be interviewed.

Property records identify the homeowner as Dorothy Delfosse.

The fire district received a report about the blaze on the 4700 block of Butler Hill Road shortly before noon from a passerby. The first crews on the scene found heavy fire and smoke. They entered the house but later had to leave because of unsafe conditions.

From there, firefighters attacked the blaze using large amounts of water.

The house began as a log cabin and grew with later additions, LaFata said.

Officials planned to monitor the site for flare-ups for the remainder of the afternoon. Most crews were expected to leave the site by about 2:30 p.m.

More than 10 emergency vehicles were on the scene as of 2 p.m. The Mehlville, Rock Community and Saline Valley fire protection districts responded. About 30 firefighters assisted in putting out the fire.
