Firefighters Fill Boots for Muscular Dystrophy

Firefighters from the Mehlville Fire Protection District are collecting money at area intersections for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Local firefighters are raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association from now until Labor Day.

This weekend and every weekend until Sept. 2, firefighters will be at several intersections on Lindbergh Boulevard collecting donations from residents passing by. They'll be storing the money in their boots in a tradition known as the "Fill the Boot" campaign.

The Mehlville Fire Protection District donates anywhere between $10,000 and $30,000 a year to muscular dystrophy, and is a leader in the area with the most money raised, said Assistant Chief Dan LaFata.

Firefighters volunteer while on duty over the weekends leading up to Labor Day and donate the money at the Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon Sept. 2.

“It’s been a tradition around here for as long as I’ve been in the fire district,” LaFata said.
