Suicidal Man Cause of 255 Accident

A man jumped from the Lemay Ferry overpass, causing an accident Thursday morning.

Police have released details about the cause of a car accident on Interstate 255 and Lemay Ferry Road Thursday morning. 

A 35-year-old male jumped from the overpass on Lemay Ferry Road onto the westbound lanes of 255.

The man, who is a South County resident, landed on the tarp of a semi-truck and fell onto the highway, where he was hit by another car. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said. 

Based upon witness statements, the man was suspected of drug use and was suicidal prior to the incident, said Officer Mike Schira with the Fourth Precinct.

All lanes of Interstate 255 are now open; the accident has been cleared.

At approximately 9:40 a.m., the westbound lanes of Highway 255 at Lemay Ferry Road were shut down due to a vehicle accident involving a person who was struck.

Three people were transported to a local hospital with one in critical condition, said Deputy Chief Dan LaFata with the Mehlville Fire Protection District.  

Two lanes are still shut down, but most of the wreckage has been cleared and all fire vehicles have left, LaFata said. 

The circumstances about how the person got struck are unknown.
