159 Car Accidents Among 3,000 Calls for Mehlville Fire

The district saw more EMS calls than fires in the first quarter of 2012.

Every 41 minutes, the receives a call at one of its seven firehouses.

The district, which covers 52 square miles and more than 110,000 residents, released the call summary from January to March of this year. In 91 days, firefighters and paramedics responded to 3,153 calls.

Paramedic calls are more frequent than traditional fires, with 439 sickness calls. The district also had 336 reports of falls, 298 difficulty breathing cases and 247 chest pain calls.

Firefighters responded to 159 vehicle accidents and 21 vehicle fires.

The district also handled four working fires, 15 commercial fires and 18 brush fires.

On the odd or interesting side, firefighter/paramedics responded to two animal bites, 17 lock-outs and two calls where people were trapped in an elevator.

The Mehlville Fire Protection District covers Mehlville, Oakville and parts of Lemay as well as Sunset Hills, Green Park, Concord, Sappington, Tesson Ferry and Mattese townships.
