No Injuries Reported in Telegraph House Fire

A candle caused the fire in the home of a Mehlville resident Saturday night.

At 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, firefighters responded to a home at 2822 Telegraph Road. No one was injuried. The fire started on the upper floor in the bathroom when the resident left a lit candle unattended, according to Mehlville Fire Protection District Chief Tim White.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire before it spread to the homes on either side of it.  The house sustained smoke damage and the upstairs was charred, but damage did not extend far beyond the bathroom. One resident was inside the house and stayed with a neighbor for the rest of the night.

"Candles are one of the leading causes of fires in the home- many homeowners are leaving them unattended," White said. "People need to be cognizant if they're going to light a fire in the house, they need to remember."
