Councilman Stenger Says Work Should Stop on HUD Senior Housing Complex

Stenger told with the developer's attorney the final ruling could go against them.

The St. Louis County Council approved a resolution June 11, by a 5-1 vote, to hold a public hearing on the zoning of the 1.5 acres a HUD senior housing complex is now being built on.

Residents say the property, on Telegraph Road in Oakville, was rezoned in May 2012 without proper notification of residents, and they didn’t have the opportunity to express their opinions.

The hearing to reconsider the zoning will be 7 p.m. July 15, in the County Council Chambers, 41 S. Central Avenue, Clayton.

The June 11 resolution passed, but construction on the three-story building has not stopped. The site is currently being graded.

The contractor has said work won't stop until the original rezoning is officially reversed.

The Call spoke with St. Louis County Sixth District Councilman Steve Stenger, who said the developer has the option to stop construction to mitigate its costs, if the council’s final decision goes against them.

"I would caution them that this may be a situation where the Planning Commission acts, the County Council acts and they may be ... essentially zoned out of their intended use. And if that happens, they have had an opportunity now to cease their construction, and I conveyed that to their attorney,” Stenger told The Call.
