Metro Transit to Study South County Transport Expansion

The area could be getting an improved transport system, thanks to a federal grant.

Metro Transit will be studying a way to expand public transport along Interstate 55 and in South County, along with purchasing new buses and improving the organization’s infrastructure.

Federal transit officials gave $3.8 million in grants to St. Louis Metro Transit Monday, the St. Louis Beacon reported.

With that money, $200,000 will be used to conduct an Interstate 55 corridor study to look at options that would improve transport from downtown St. Louis to South County.

The options range from enhanced bus service to a light rail, Dianne Williams said in the article. Williams is a spokeswoman for Metro Transit and said this was the first step in studying the area.

While Metro Transit will use some funds for the study, $2 million will be used to purchase several new 60-foot buses. These buses will allow more passengers and be used along Grand Avenue.
