MoDOT Closing Two Lanes On Jefferson Barracks Bridge

Two westbound lanes on the Jefferson Barracks bridge will be closed each evening at 8 p.m. through 5. a.m. Monday through Friday this week. MoDOT will be conducting scheduled tests.

If you travel westbound on Interstate 255 on the Jefferson Barracks bridge during the evening and late night hours this week, you may want to consider another route.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is closing two of the three westbound lanes Monday through Friday (Jan. 24 - 28) between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. to conduct bridge inspections. One lane will remain open but drivers may experience delays.

MoDOT Community Relations Specialist Jack Wang said that the tests were routine and had been scheduled. "We always test the bridges," Wang said. "We're closing two lanes because we're bringing in special equipment."

Typically, MoDOT tries to avoid closing two lanes at a time, but for the tests of the Jefferson Barracks bridge, MoDOT is using radiographic equipment.

"It's sort of like x-rays," Wang said. "They'll use it to take a look at the driving surface and at the structure of the bridge."

Wang also said that they are hopeful good weather conditions hold. "We're keeping our fingers crossed that we can get the inspections done this week. We looked at the weather forecast and it remains good for the rest of this week.”

Wang urges drivers to exercise caution. "We will have all the messages out there that there are lane closures coming up ahead so drivers should see them. When they are in the work zone, we ask drivers to slow down and pay attention, get off their cell phones and watch out for our workers."

To see alternate driving routes during the lane closures, drivers can call 1-888-ASK-MODOT or visit the MoDOT Web site for information.
