The U.S. Constitution: Do We Really Mean What It Says?

Between the BBQ and fireworks, we need to consider the values we claim to embrace.

Here's some random thoughts on the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution as we get set to celebrate the Declaration of Independence.

“We the people of the United States...” Ever thought about what that really means? I think it means we’re all in this together and we need to figure out a way to get along and make “it” work.

“In order to form a more perfect union...” The founders were trying to create something “more perfect” than what they already had. Something better than the Articles of Confederation.

“Establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility...” After a 25-plus year career in law enforcement, I know I’m cynical when it comes to that establishing justice part. But as I look at what’s going on in the world it seems we’re still better at it than most other countries. I think we should be proud of that while continually striving to do better.

And speaking of domestic tranquility, my family and I just returned from spending the week with my leftist, tree-hugging, crystal-worshipping, socialist, sister-in-law. She rejects personal responsibility in favor of the “it takes a village” philosophy and doesn’t think there is any problem government cannot solve. Really? I’m having trouble thinking of any long term societal problem government HAS solved. In spite of her views, we always have a great time together and enjoy the vibrant political discussion that passes for “domestic tranquility” in my wife’s family.

“Provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare...” Does public education fall into this category? Certainly, as Jefferson said, a well-educated citizenry is our best defense against tyranny and contributes to promoting the general welfare of all. But is public education the best way to get us there? So many variables contribute to a successful educational experience. I wonder if we do ourselves a disservice by promoting via taxation and other government support, public education at the expense of all other experiences.

“And secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity...” Because really, that’s what it’s all about I think. Creating a country, a world, where we know that all the blessings that we’ve enjoyed as citizens are guaranteed to be past on to our children. Isn’t that what we work for, fight for, and care about?

“Do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” So, there it is. A clear and concise, one-paragraph reason for why we continue to pin our hopes and dreams on the promise of America.

Whether we’re talking about national, state, or local issues, and whether I think or you think I’m or you’re right or wrong, I’m glad we can still talk.

Thoughts to ponder as we approach our national birthday.
