Bernard Middle Tennis Courts Project Approved

The project moves forward after a favorable vote during the Mehlville School Board's last meeting. The tennis courts, however, will not have lights in order to save on costs.

The Mehlville School Board approved unanimously a bid of $513,896 from the company Byrne & Jones Construction for new tennis courts to be built at Bernard Middle School.

Grants and rebates, however, will bring the cost down to $434,666. The maximum amount to be spent by the district on the tennis courts is $450,000.

Superintendent Eric Knost said he was pleasantly surprised with the number of companies that bid for the project.

“There is a lot of interest in this job, which makes it very exciting,” Knost said.

Adding lights to the courts would bring the cost up by approximately $80,000 so the board decided to keep the courts without lights. In the future, the board may decide to install lights.

“Most schools’ tennis courts do not have lights,” Knost said. “If we could have lights, we could extend their use to later in the day, but that’s not necessary at the time.”
