Candidate Already in Line for School Board Election

The election for the Mehlville School District Board of Education starts Tuesday morning, but Larry Felton is already in line.

Hoping to be first in line to file as a candidate for the Mehlville School District Board of Education?

Tough luck. Larry Felton has you beat.

Candidates can’t file until 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, but Felton has been in line to file since Wednesday afternoon, ensuring his name will be first on the ballot.

“I think it’s a sign of respect to the people of the district, that I put my time in to be first on the ballot,” Felton said at the district’s headquarters on Mehlville High School’s campus. “It’s just showing commitment.”

In order to keep his spot at the front of the line, Felton waits at the school board headquarters from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. He can take three 15 minute breaks: one in the morning, one for lunch and one in the afternoon.

Volunteers can sit for Felton, who is running for his third term. On Thursday, a friend took over his shift so he could make some meetings for work.

Want to run for school board?

Any person wishing to file for the Mehlville School District Board of Education may do so in the Superintendent’s office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, and Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013. Filing will also take place from Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, through Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Monday – Friday). An election for two seats on the Board will be held April 2, 2013. The seats carry a three-year term.

The office will be closed Dec. 21, 2012, at 1 p.m. through Jan. 2, 2013, for winter break.

No filings will be accepted on days when the office is closed or when school is closed for inclement weather.
