Eight OHS Debate Students Compete in Jefferson City

The students will find out the results on Saturday.

Rep. Cloria Brown (R-Mehlville) was among the legislators, legislative assistants, interns and professionals from Jefferson City and Columbia who judged 113 high school students at the State Capitol Feb. 25.

The Eastern Missouri District of the National Forensic League has been holding its Congressional Debate national qualifying tournament at the capitol for several years now, but this is the first time they have asked for outside judges.

"The students were thrilled to have judges who work at the capitol, and the judges were very impressed with the students' knowledge of congressional procedure and debating skills," said Ed Taylor, chairman of the NFL District and coach at .

"It was a great experience, one I hope we can expand to include more representatives next year."

Oakville sent eight students to the competition.

The winners will be announced Saturday at the conclusion of the NFL District speech and debate competition. Anyone who is interested in helping judge Thursday evening, Friday or Saturday should contact Ed Taylor.
