Mehlville Girls Soccer Player Signs With Local College

Goalkeeper Meggin Werner will continue her athletic career at the college level with St. Louis Community College-Forest Park.

Mehlville High School senior Meggin Werner officially joined the roster of the St. Louis Community College-Forest Park women’s soccer team at a signing ceremony Tuesday at the high school.

Werner, who plays goalkeeper, has been a key part of the team’s defense as a varsity player for all four of her years at Mehlville. Last year, she was named “Player of the Week” by the Suburban Journals and helped the team take first place at the Lutheran South Tournament, according to Coach Tom Harper.

Harper said she has shown remarkable maturity and leads the backfield with a calm, confident personality no matter the score, which is particularly crucial when games are close.

“She’s a kid that is capable of keeping us in the match,” Harper said.

Werner will be joining a squad that advanced to the semifinal of the Region XVI playoffs last fall. St. Louis Community College Coach Juergen Huettner said he was in need of a goalie for the 2011 season and expects Werner will fill the role well.

“She looks like she will fit right in with us. She’s very talented,” he said, adding that he was impressed with the amount of her experience on the field. “Every time she was out there, she took some shots.”

For her part, Werner is simply glad to continue doing what she loves after she graduates this spring.

“When I play, I feel like it’s my passion. I feel like it’s what I was born to do,” she said.

But before she takes the field at the collegiate level, Werner and the rest of the Mehlville girls squad have a full season ahead, beginning with a match at Webster Groves March 22. The team went 12-13 in 2010 and Harper said he is hopeful they can improve on that this year.
