Mehlville School Board Approves 16 Additional Hours of Student Instruction in 2011-2012

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Even though it seems as if the end of the school year was just last week, the Mehlville School District Board of Education was hard at work making decisions for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year. In a recent meeting the board approved revisions to the 2011-12 academic calendar, which include an additional 16 hours of instructional time for district students throughout the year. The eight days previously slated for two-hour early release days for students and professional development days for staff have been designated as full school days under the revised calendar.

The additional instructional time will lead staff members to participate in professional development opportunities outside of the regular school day. Each school will determine its staff professional development schedule, which can include sessions over summer break, in the evenings or on Saturdays. While the duration of the individual professional development sessions may vary, the sessions will total 16 hours. Staff members will receive an hourly rate of compensation for attending professional development sessions outside of regular school hours. Attendance at the sessions will be optional for staff members, but the district expects to have a high rate of participation.
