Mehlville School District Above State Average, But Fails to Meet State Goals

Just 92 of the 557 districts made the state benchmark.

The Mehlville School District did not achieve state-set proficiency goals in the areas of communications arts or math in 2011, preliminary data from the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) shows. However, the district did meet state attendance and graduation rates and ranked better than the state average in reading and math.

In Missouri, 92 of 557 districts—only 25 percent—met the state benchmark in math and reading, according to the preliminary results released Thursday.

Students take the MAP tests in communication arts and math each spring. The tests are requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act, a program aiming to have 100 percent of students testing at their proficient grade level by 2014.

Each state has goals that get more difficult closer to 2014. This year, Missouri schools had to have 75.2 percent of students test at grade level in math and 75.5 percent in reading. Schools who have achieved this goal are said to have made "Adequate Yearly Progress" (AYP).

Each district and school also have subgroups that include students with low socioeconomic status, students with disabilities, white and black students and several others. If one subgroup doesn't meet the goals, the school does not make AYP and is classified as failing.

Three schools in the district—Hagemann, Point and Rogers Elementary schools—met state standards in all subgroups of the Missouri Assessment Program.

Schools that fail face sanctions ranging from paying for additional tutoring, to allowing students to switch to other schools in the district that made AYP.

“As we progress towards 2014, the state targets increase each year, making it extremely difficult – and in some cases impossible – for districts to achieve AYP,” said Mehlville School District Superintendent Eric Knost in a statement. “While we didn’t achieve AYP as a district this year, I am pleased with the various improvements throughout our schools, including in communication arts and in our graduation and attendance rates. I am confident that our students will continue to show similar improvement in the future as well.”

**Patch will have several follow-up stories on the MAP testing data as well as input from district officials next week.
