Mehlville Schools Host Ceremonies To Remember Sept. 11

Each school in the district had an assembly, or thanked first responders in some way.

Most students at were not alive when two planes struck the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 one decade ago.

That’s not to say they don’t know about the attack, or haven’t been affected by its consequences. These kids grew up in a post-terrorist world, hearing about the events of that day at least once a year. They grew up with the Iraq War, Operation Enduring Freedom and the death of Osama bin Laden.

In honor of 9/11, Trautwein students held a ceremony Friday outside the school. They invited members of the Mehlville Fire Protection District, St. Louis County Police and the National Guard to hear patriotic songs and raise the flag to half-mast.

Students and schools across the Mehlville School District donated $1 to wear red, white and blue Friday. Their donations went to the Fisher House, an organization that helps military families in their time of need.

Each school also had their own remembrance event ranging from assemblies to talking with local first responders. had an assembly and invited police and firefighters to talk to the kids and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

made thank you cards and served lunch drive-thru style to County Police and Mehlville Firefighters.

Other schools watched news footage from that day and shared memories and thoughts with each other.
