Mehlville University Student Given Award from SIU Alumni Association

Julie Schroeter was among 40 Southern Illinois University students who were awarded textbooks and supplies.

A university student from Mehlville was among 40 people who received an award from the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association earlier this month.

Julie Schroeter, a senior who is studying animal science, is one of the recipients. On Jan. 15, the association gave more than $20,000 to support the financial needs of the students, a news release notes.

“Attending SIU has allowed me to gain experience and education in my area of study, animal science, and in my transition from child to adult," stated Schroeter in the news release. "I have formed many relationships with my professors and colleagues during my years at SIU, and these relationships have furthered my passion in my field of study, as well as in the agricultural industry.”

In 2008, the association's scholarship commitee worked with the university's financial aid office to identify how to best help students, the news release notes. That's when the association's board of directors allocated funding to support the awards.

“Opportunities such as this would not be possible without the continued support of our members," stated Barry Smith, president of the SIU Alumni Association, in the news release.
