Mehlville Writer Earns National Recognition

Junior Marlee Cox's short story won a gold medal in a national competition.

has its own F. Scott Fitzgerald in junior Marlee Cox, who for the second year, earned national recognition for her writing abilities.

Cox earned a gold medal for her short story "Sonata in the Key of Bea," from the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers and its Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. In 2011, her poem won a gold medal. 

“I was extremely excited when I found out,” Cox said in a district release. “I was so glad they chose to honor me with these awards.”

Cox also received the American Voices Medal, making her story the best piece of submitted work in the Midwest. For her recognition, Cox will attend a celebration at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June. 

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the largest source for young artists and writers to earn scholarships as well as the longest-running, most prestigious program for teens in the country.

Cox was one of 1,600 students to receive an award with more than 200,000 works of art and writing submitted in the competition.
